These questions and answers will be posted with full recognition. The postings will only be edited for improper usage. This is being done for fun in an effort to share knowledge about our industry. Q: "Is there an advantage to using s-video cable over composite video cable in long cable run applications?" A: "First of all, the only benefit to s-video is the separation of the luminance portion (high frequency) from the chromanance portion (low frequency) of an NTSC signal which can result in a reduction of color bleeding, noise, etc. However how well this works depends a lot on the quality of the NTSC comb filter that strips this portion of the signal. The down side to splitting the signals, especially over long cable runs, is that timing issues can arise due to high frequencies traveling faster than low frequencies. Also, s-video cables cost a lot more than composite cables. Often times twice as much." More to come in our Next issue.
