Choosing the right Non-Linear Editing system Try to consider the choices facing someone trying to choose the right non-linear editing system. First you need to determine what video formats you will use to aquire and deliver with. This will determine the speed and architecture of the computer used to edit and output the signals. Armed with the correct format information, One can determine what inputs and outputs required to get video and audio into or out of the editing system. A Windows machine or a MacIntosh computer with the right capture card should fill the needs required for the editing system. Next the need for graphics integration must be considered. Most systems play well with Adobe Photoshop or After-effects for graphics integration. If someone wants to use the MacIntosh computer with Final Cut pro- for example- it is a good idea to use Adobe After effects, or Apple's Motion. This is because Final Cut will not sub pixel render graphics and the quality could be compromised if the output is for broadcast television or DVD. A good audio subsystem is required for monitoring audio and mixing correct signal levels without distortion. A quality NTSC or PAL Video monitor is necessary to be sure the colors and output signals are compliant with the standard the Video will be delivered to.
Next and lastly workflow concerns need to be addressed. If the editor is to be used for DV or Off-line editing as opposed to a finishing or post production system, the requirements are much less stringent. Above all- it is recommended that the system be built for editing only and not used for accounting or office tasks. Multi-tasking on an editing system can corrupt data. It is important that the system be built by an integrator that uses warranted parts from a reputable vendor, and follows the manufacturer's guidelines for proper drive and paging file configuration to be able to accommodate the large video and audio files properly.
