Is there a system available to edit video without rendering? I have been using Final Cut Pro on a Macintosh G4 system for my video editing, but I am switching over to a PC based system and if possible, I don't want to render what would be a good solution? As with most people I have a limited budget. Compiled From Our Stump the Tech Questions By Steve Sharkey Hi-Tech Enterprises Inc. (2008) Answer: Well, there are several systems I can recommend. Depending on whether or not you are planning to edit in SD (Standard definition), HD (High definition) or HDV (compressed High Definition). Continued below
Answer: If you are only going to do SD I would recommend Matrox RTX2 SD this hardware replaces the previous RTX-100 hardware which had been a workhorse of non-linear editors for many years. This new hardware utilizes either Adobe Premiere Pro CS2 or CS3 (the latest), it is also the least expensive of the three systems recommended here. It does many effects and transitions in real time so there is no rendering required for those. The other nice thing is that say you want to output your video to a DVD you will render your video to a DVD compatible MPEG (VOBs), it will render the files in real time. What that means is if you have two hours of video footage to render, then it can output the DVD files in two hours or less not the typical 4 to 6 hours of some systems. If you plan on doing both SD and HDV then I would suggest the slightly more expensive Matrox RTX2 it can edit both formats equally and has the same real time features in HDV and SD that the RTX2 SD has in standard definition. It also uses Adobe Premiere Pro CS3. For editing HD uncompressed, I recommend the AXIO LE system, it has the same capabilities as far as real time that the other two systems have and it also utilizes Adobe Premiere Pro CS3 but can also edit HD uncompressed as well as HDV and SD. Of course the price and hard drive subsystems requirements are quite a bit higher than what is required on the other two systems. Concluding There are many other systems on the market to choose from such as SpeedEDIT by Newtek which is software based and will even run on a laptop albeit with limited real time capabilities. But as far as keeping the rendering down to a minimum I believe the Matrox line has proven to be one of the leaders in real time hardware based technology.
